Landscapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Fifteen small oil panels of the Sonoran desert laid out in a grid — saguaro stands, boulder fields, a road through scrub, mesas, and one sunset.
Five rows of three, edge to edge and square to the frame, so the group is read as a sheet rather than a stack. Within them the horizon sits at the same height in nearly every panel, which is what makes the grid hold together.
Cerulean and turquoise skies over ranges in violet and periwinkle, with the ground in sage, bone and rose. The single sunset panel — orange over a black ridge — is the only warm one and sits at the middle right.
Loaded and broken, the sky laid in flat square-ended strokes and the scrub dabbed over a warm ground. The saguaros are drawn last, single upward pulls of green over finished paint.
Oil on canvas board, fifteen panels, the edges painted white. A studio photograph of a group of works rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
