Landscapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Six small oil panels of the high desert laid out together — cloud over open range, a burning sunset, ocotillo on a pale flat, sunflowers below a ridge, and a Joshua tree at last light.
The panels are laid edge to edge in two staggered columns, each one its own picture. All six are built the same way: a high flat horizon, a sky taking at least half the panel, and no vertical in the foreground tall enough to cross it.
The group runs cold to hot and back — cobalt and dove in the cloud studies, cadmium orange and scarlet in the two sunsets, sage and chartreuse in the sunflower panel. The light is the variable; the land stays the same.
Thick and loaded throughout, the sky laid in long horizontal pulls that leave ridges standing off the surface and the foreground dabbed in short broken strokes. Nothing is blended in any of the six.
Oil on canvas board, six panels, the edges painted white. A studio photograph of a group of works rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
