Landscapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A group of trees on open ground under a flat grey sky, three close at the right and one standing alone at the left, with a pale field between them.
The trees are set at uneven intervals across the width and the gap between the two groups is the real subject. The horizon runs level behind them and the ground takes the bottom fifth.
Grey-white through the sky with no blue in it at all, against trees in bottle green, olive and rust. The field below is a sharp acid green — the only saturated colour.
The foliage is laid in short loaded strokes stabbed in several greens, thick enough to stand off the surface. The sky is scraped flat behind them with the knife and left almost featureless.
Oil on canvas board. Strong impasto in the trees against a scraped, thin sky. Photographed on a sketchbook of ink drawings, which is beneath the work rather than part of it.
Lower left, raypatrick, in dark green over the grass, letters touching.
