Landscapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

An upright oil of three heavy trees on a flat green verge against a blue sky, with two tiny figures sitting on the grass beneath them.
Upright and almost symmetrical — the tree masses fill the upper two thirds and the verge runs level beneath. The two figures are a few millimetres high and set the scale for everything above them.
Olive, bottle green and sap green through the foliage against a cobalt and cerulean sky, with the verge in chartreuse and ochre. The two figures carry the only coral and blue.
Built from separate loaded dabs with the sky showing between them, so the canopies read as open rather than solid. The paint stands thick throughout and no edge is softened.
Oil on canvas paper with an unpainted margin. Photographed on the studio table beside a display block.
