Landscapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A rocky headland dropping to the sea, with sunlit cliffs in the foreground, a pale beach below and a long coastline receding into haze.
The cliff mass fills the right half and steps down to the centre; the sea opens across the left. The coastline behind runs in diminishing bands, and a thin pale beach cuts across the bottom right.
Ochre, cream and apricot on the lit rock against violet and plum in its shadow. The sea runs emerald in the shallows to ultramarine beyond, with a sky of lilac and pale blue.
Thick and square. Each rock plane is a single loaded stroke with an abrupt end, and the shadows are flat unmodulated violet cut straight in beside them. The surf is dragged with a drier brush.
Oil on canvas board. Heavy impasto through the cliffs; photographed resting on a spiral sketchbook of figure drawings, which is beneath the work rather than part of it.
Lower left, raypatrick, in ochre over the water, letters widely spaced.
