Landscapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

An upright oil of a bare autumn sapling standing in front of a green hillside, its few remaining leaves scattered along the branches, lying on an open sketchbook of pen figure drawings.
Upright. The sapling runs the full height just left of centre as a thin vertical and the hill behind rises on a diagonal; there is no sky and no horizon, only slope.
Olive, sage and bottle green through the hill with a pale cream passage where the light falls on it. The leaves are cadmium orange and rust — small hot flecks scattered up the whole height.
Thick and scumbled, the hill dragged in broad strokes with the colour beneath showing through, and the branches drawn last as single thin dark pulls. The leaves are individual flecks laid on dry paint.
Oil on canvas paper with an unpainted margin. A studio photograph resting on a sketchbook of pen drawings, which are separate works.
Lower centre, raypatrick, scratched into the wet paint in blue.
