Landscapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

A hillside in late light, its flanks striped with shadow, with a single dark tree below it and a line of small buildings along the valley floor.
The hill fills the upper two thirds and runs diagonally from the upper left down to the right; the valley is compressed into a narrow band at the base. The tree sits just left of centre and is the only incident in the lower half.
Mauve, plum and ochre through the hillside with cobalt in the shadowed gullies, under a sky of pale turquoise. The valley is a strip of green and gold; the tree a near-black.
The hill is stroked downward along its own slopes so the direction of the paint is the direction of the land. The gullies are single pulls of blue laid wet into the warmer colour beside them.
Oil on canvas board. Moderately loaded with the weave reading through; photographed resting on a sketchbook of line drawings, which is the support beneath it rather than part of the work.
Lower right, raypatrick, in cobalt over the dark foreground, letters widely spaced.
