Subject

A broad valley under an evening sky, with a dirt track running in from the left, scrub and grass across the middle distance, and a long range of hills behind.

Composition

Low horizon and three shallow bands — hills, flat, foreground — with the track entering at the left and curving away to the centre. Nothing stands up from the land; the picture is carried entirely by the recession.

Palette

Lavender and dove grey in the hills under a sky of cream and pale blue. The flats run sap green, olive and ochre, with small notes of rust and orange in the scrub.

Handling

Horizontal strokes throughout, laid shoulder to shoulder and following the lie of the land, with the greens broken into short dabs in the middle distance. The hills are scrubbed thin so the canvas texture reads through.

Medium and support

Oil on canvas board. Thin in the sky and distance, more loaded in the foreground; the weave is legible in the paler passages. The board is photographed loose, with its white edge showing.

Signature

Lower right, in blue over the dark foreground, small and abbreviated.
