Landscapes — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

A view through a stand of eucalyptus to a valley beyond, with a tiled-roof building below and the sea just visible at the horizon.
The trunks run top to bottom at intervals across the whole width, dividing the view into vertical slots, and the landscape is seen in the gaps rather than over them. The canopy closes the top edge.
Sap green and olive in the canopy against a pale blue-green sky. The trunks are bone and lavender; the valley below runs ochre, sage and a strip of cerulean sea.
The canopy is dabbed in flat touches with sky showing through; the trunks are single long pulls of pale paint drawn last, straight over the finished foliage, so they sit clearly in front.
Gouache over a watercolour ground on paper, worked within a taped border — the masking is still in place. Matte and opaque.
Across the centre, raypatrick, in white over the trees, letters widely spaced.
