Landscapes — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

Ranks of cloud over a low coastal town at dusk, with utility poles and wires crossing the foreground and a second palm study above.
Nine tenths sky. The town runs level across the lower sixth and the cloud is stacked above in four or five ranks that shorten as they recede. The poles cross it all as thin verticals and the wires rule the sky into bands.
Cobalt and periwinkle through the sky with cloud in bone, dove and lilac. The town is olive and plum; the whole picture is held in blue and grey with no warm colour at all.
Flat opaque dabs laid in horizontal ranks, each a separate loaded touch with its edges left showing. The poles and wires are drawn last in single thin dark lines across finished paint.
Gouache on paper, over a ruled pencil border, on a blue sheet. A studio photograph of a page with a second study above it.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in black over the town, letters widely spaced.
