Landscapes — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A broad valley seen from high ground at the end of the day, cloud ranked above it, with a town spread across the floor and hills closing the distance.
Three registers — sky, hills, valley floor — with the sky taking two thirds. The cloud runs in horizontal ranks that shorten toward the horizon; nothing rises above the skyline.
Cobalt and cerulean in the breaks of blue, with the cloud in cream, dove and a faint rose along its lit edges. The valley below is violet, sage and slate, with one stroke of cadmium orange marking a roof.
Flat opaque planes stacked rather than modelled, each with square ends and its own edge left showing. The valley is a weave of short horizontal strokes, denser and smaller than anything above.
Gouache on paper — the Winsor & Newton tubes are in the photograph. Matte and opaque, with a deckle edge and a white margin.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in orange over the valley, letters widely spaced.
