Landscapes — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A seafront walk at sunset with palms in silhouette, a cyclist and two figures on the path, and low buildings running away to the left.
Three palm trunks run the full height and divide the picture into panels; the sun sits between the second and third. The path opens toward the bottom and the long shadows of the palms run straight at the viewer.
Cobalt and teal in the upper sky going to cream and gold around the sun. The ground is ochre and olive crossed by violet shadow; the palms and figures are near-black.
Flat opaque planes with the shadows laid as single long strokes straight down the path. The palm crowns are struck in with quick dark marks and the bicycle is a scribble of thin dark lines over dry paint.
Gouache on paper, 5 × 7 in. — read off the Fabriano block beneath it. Matte and opaque, with a deckle edge all round.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in red over the path, letters widely spaced.
