Landscapes — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A bank of cloud at evening over a flat sea horizon, with a single palm crown entering at the right edge.
A wide, shallow format. The horizon runs level across the lower sixth and the cloud fills everything above, massed heavily at the left and breaking into lit fragments toward the right.
Slate, violet and dove through the cloud bodies with cream and pale gold along their lit edges, against patches of cerulean. The sea is a flat band of deep blue.
Flat opaque planes with square ends, stacked rather than modelled, and the lit edges cut in afterwards as separate strokes. Nothing is blended; the form is carried by where one plane stops.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque, with a white margin round the painted area. Photographed above the pan palette it was mixed in.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in orange over the sea, letters widely spaced.
