Landscapes — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A long green headland seen from above, falling away in fields to a bay, with a small white car on the slope and shipping on the horizon.
The land fills five sixths of the picture and the sea is a band across the top; the slope recedes in a series of diminishing fields. The car sits small and alone at the lower left and sets the scale.
Sap green, emerald and olive through the fields, the sea in ultramarine and cerulean with a pale band of haze at the horizon. The car is the only pure white.
Broad flat strokes following the lie of each field, laid side by side with no blending, so the hillside is a patchwork of planes. The hedges are single dark pulls drawn between them.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque, with a white margin round the painted area.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in orange over the grass, letters widely spaced.
