Landscapes — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

An orange bus pulled up at a stop on a wide road, with traffic beyond it, utility poles along the kerb and a bank of cloud over low buildings.
The bus occupies the lower left and is cropped by the edge, which gives it the feeling of moving through. The road opens away to the right and the cloud mass sits directly above that empty half, balancing it.
Cobalt sky with pewter and white cloud over a road of warm grey and khaki. The bus is cadmium orange and is the only saturated colour in the picture.
The cloud is laid in flat loaded dabs with their edges showing; the road is dragged in long horizontal strokes. The bus is a single flat mass with its windows struck in afterwards as dark dashes.
Gouache on paper. Matte and opaque; painted to a ragged edge over a blue ground that shows at the margins. Photographed beside the palette it was mixed on.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in orange over the road, letters widely spaced.
