Landscapes — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A coast road running out of the picture toward the sea, with a dark car driving away, low buildings to the left and a stand of tall palms closing the right.
The road enters at the bottom and narrows to a point just below the horizon, which does all the work of depth. The palms rise at the right and are cropped by the top edge; the cloud mass sits directly above the vanishing point.
Cobalt and periwinkle through the sky with white and pale grey cloud, against a road of warm mauve and ochre. The palms and the car are near-black; a thin strip of cerulean marks the sea.
The cloud is laid in flat dabs with their edges left showing, light over dark, so the sky reads as built from touches. The car is a single dark shape and the palm crowns are three or four strokes each.
Gouache on a watercolour block — matte and fully opaque, the pale cloud sitting solid over the blue. A white deckle margin runs round all four sides.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in red-orange over the road, letters widely spaced.
