Landscapes — painting by Ray Patrick

A hillside of flowering scrub falling away to a blue bay, seen close and steeply from above, with a sandy track along the bottom edge.
Everything runs on one diagonal from the upper left to the lower right — the slope, the track, the line of the water — so there is no level anywhere in the picture and no horizon at all.
Emerald, chartreuse and olive through the slope with flecks of cadmium yellow scattered across it, against cobalt and ultramarine in the water. The track below is ochre with small notes of vermilion.
Heavy impasto, the paint standing well off the board, laid in short strokes that all run with the slope. The yellow flecks are put in last with the tip of the brush and left untouched.
Oil on canvas board, the edges painted white. Photographed on the studio table with brushes beside it.
No signature visible within the painted area.
