watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Several figures and heads crowded across a sketchbook page in pen and watercolour — two large heads in the lower half, a seated nude above, all on a flooded scarlet ground.
The heads overlap and run off every edge, with no setting and no ground plane. The page is filled corner to corner, so the composition is read as a crowd rather than as a group.
Flesh carried in cobalt, violet and apricot against hair in acid green, over a ground flooded in scarlet and magenta. The colour is deliberately wrong for the subject throughout.
Drawn first in a fast closed pen line and then washed inside it, with the red ground flooded round the figures afterwards and allowed to run over the drawing at the edges.
Watercolour with pen and ink in a sketchbook.
No signature visible within the drawn area.
