High Desert Sunrise 7 5 oil 600 yes desert

High desert at first light, cloud breaking above a long ridge, with scrub and a dirt track running across the foreground.
Three registers — sky, ridge, desert floor — with the sky taking two thirds. The ridge runs level the full width and nothing rises above it; the track enters at the lower left.
Cerulean and lilac through the cloud with cream where the light breaks, over a ridge of violet-blue. The floor runs rose, ochre and sage with flecks of emerald.
Thick and loaded, the cloud built with the brush turning as it goes so its edges are scalloped rather than drawn. The foreground is dabbed in short broken strokes over a warm ground.
Oil on board. Impasto throughout, with the board's edges painted white.
No signature visible within the painted area.
