Head in a flat hat with a cigarette
A head in three-quarter profile under the brim of a flat hat, cigarette in the mouth, long hair falling behind — a caricature rather than a portrait.
Wide and horizontal, the head filling the whole sheet and cropped at the chin and the back of the hair. The hat brim is a single straight bar across the top edge and is the only straight line in the picture.
Vermilion and sienna through the face against hair in cobalt and viridian — complementaries set directly against one another. Lemon yellow marks the teeth and the cigarette.
Pen line first, fast and unhesitating, with the colour flooded inside it afterwards and allowed to run past the drawing in several places. The strokes in the hair are drawn with the brush, not washed.
Watercolour with pen and ink on paper. Transparent throughout.
