watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Five small landscape and sunset studies displayed on wooden boxes — a palm-lined beach road, a shopfront under cloud, two palms against a banded sunset, cloud at dusk, and a large scarlet sunset over dark water in a black frame.
The framed sunset lies nearest and largest in the lower half; the four smaller studies are propped on boxes behind it. All five are extreme horizontals with the land compressed into the bottom quarter.
The near study is the loudest — crimson, scarlet and cadmium orange over a black sea, with one core of lemon at the right. The four behind are cooler: cobalt, violet and dove, with warm notes only at the horizon.
Opaque and flat throughout, the cloud laid in square-ended strokes stacked rather than modelled, with the colour unmixed and nothing blended at any edge.
Watercolour and gouache on paper, five works, one framed. A studio photograph of a group of works rather than a single picture.
Lower centre of two of the studies, raypatrick, in pale letters widely spaced.
