Portraits, Fashion — marker drawing by Ray Patrick

A woman's head in three-quarter view, her curling hair cut in as flat black shapes, her face worked in bands of unmixed marker colour.
The head fills the sheet and is cropped at the crown. The black hair masses close it on both sides, leaving the face as a lit island between them — the composition is a negative shape as much as a positive one.
Magenta, scarlet, cadmium yellow and emerald laid in vertical bands across the face, with cobalt along the jaw. There is no flesh colour anywhere in it.
The face is built from broad parallel marker strokes of pure colour that never mix, and the hair is flooded solid black with a brush pen. The drawing is laid over both in a fine line.
Marker and ink in a sketchbook.
No signature visible within the drawn area.
