A woman's head in profile, her hair a great black mass, drawn in grey marker over a page carrying the handwritten words wild and free and a burst of red and yellow strokes.
The head occupies the left half and faces out of the sheet; the colour burst fills the right and radiates from behind her. The handwriting runs along the top edge, so the page reads as a spread rather than a portrait.
The face is grey and bone with a violet and gold eye; the hair is solid black. The right half is scarlet, cadmium yellow and magenta laid as raw separate strokes.
The head is modelled in flat marker greys with the line kept minimal; the colour beside it is pure gesture, dragged in broad strokes that leave the paper showing between them.
