Landscapes, Fashion, Seascapes — gouache painting by Ray Patrick

A crowded beach seen from above and along, the sand running away to a distant pier, with umbrellas, towels and bathers scattered across it and the surf at the left.
The shoreline cuts the picture corner to corner and everything is arranged along it; the crowd thins as it recedes until the far beach is only flecks. A striped umbrella in the lower right is the largest object and anchors the near edge.
Warm apricot and cream through the sand against jade and emerald in the shallows. The crowd carries every hue in small quantities — the striped umbrella alone holds four.
Figures are single loaded strokes, dozens of them, diminishing in size with no change in method. The sand is dragged in long diagonal pulls and the surf is one broken white line.
Gouache on paper — the tubes are in the photograph beside it. Matte and opaque, with a white margin round the painted area.
Along the lower edge, raypatrick, in red over the sand, letters widely spaced.
