Dinner with the cat
Mersh at dinner in an orange shirt, a blonde woman beside him smoking, and a black cat sitting up at the table between them wearing a striped tie. The table is loaded — steak, shrimp, bread rolls, drinks. A lit sign behind them reads ARIZONA CH.
Three heads along the top of the sheet and the whole lower half given over to the spread of food, which is drawn at the same level of attention as the faces. The cat is placed exactly between the two people, where a third diner would sit.
Orange and coral through his shirt against the cold violets and blues of the booth and the night behind. The food carries small hot accents of red and gold and the cat is the single black mass.
Ink line throughout with the colour brushed on in small, separate touches rather than flooded, so each dish keeps its own edge. The faces are modelled; the tablecloth is left almost bare.
