Landscapes, Desert — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Four watercolour studies across a sketchbook spread — two wide views of red mesas above green flats, a close study of a purple canyon wall above a river, and a small red butte study.
The two wide studies are stacked on the left page and are near-repeats of one another: a level red rim, a band of green below, scrub in front. The canyon study opposite is upright and crops the rock hard at the top.
Vermilion, rust and oxblood in the rock against emerald and chartreuse flats. The canyon study adds violet and plum in the shadowed face; the skies are cerulean with reserved white cloud.
Laid in long horizontal pulls of saturated colour with the cloud painted round rather than lifted, and the scrub stamped over the dry flat in dozens of separate dark touches.
Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, four studies on one spread. A studio photograph of a page with the paintbox used, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
