Landscapes, Desert — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Three watercolour studies of desert ranges across two sketchbook pages — a red hillside above a dark flat, a violet mountain under cloud, and a low butte in sunlight.
One study lies across the upper page and two are ruled out on the lower one. All three put the range as an unbroken diagonal mass and give the lower quarter to scrub; none has sky worth speaking of.
Oxblood, rose and cobalt in the first range; violet, umber and dove in the second; tan and olive in the third. The flats below carry emerald, chartreuse and small flecks of yellow.
Wet throughout, the ranges laid in single flooded passes with the darks dropped in while damp so they feather, and the foreground stamped over dry paint in short separate marks.
Watercolour on paper in a spiral-bound sketchbook, three studies. A studio photograph of two pages rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
