Landscapes, Desert, Sunsets — watercolor painting by Ray Patrick

Two watercolour studies across a sketchbook spread — a sunlit butte under heavy cloud on the upper page, and a sunset reduced to bands of fire on the lower.
Both are extreme horizontals running the width of their pages. The butte study puts its rock on a long diagonal with cloud above; the sunset abandons structure altogether and is read as stacked bands with a black treeline at its foot.
The upper study is cool — cerulean, dove and lavender, with ochre and tan in the lit rock. The lower is crimson, magenta and cadmium orange over indigo, with one core of lemon at the right.
The butte is washed in flat transparent facets left to dry at their edges. The sunset is flooded and worked band against band so the colours bleed at every join, with the trees cut in last as flat black.
Watercolour in a spiral-bound sketchbook, two studies. A studio photograph of a page spread rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
