Landscapes, Desert, Seascapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Two oil panels on a studio bench — Joshua trees in silhouette against a scarlet sunset, and a storm breaking over a dark ridge with the light burning through beneath it.
The sunset panel sits behind and above, the storm panel lies flat in front and is the larger. Both are built the same way: a black foreground, a narrow band of land, and a sky that takes everything.
The sunset panel is vermilion and scarlet over ultramarine, with the trees in flat black. The storm panel is plum, slate and bottle green, lit from within by one passage of cadmium orange at its centre.
Loaded and unblended in both, the sky stroked horizontally in short marks of unmixed colour laid tight together so the gradation happens between touches rather than within them.
Oil on canvas board, two panels. A studio photograph of a pair of works on the bench, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
