Landscapes, Desert — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Two narrow panoramic oil panels on a table — red canyon walls above a green flat under cumulus, and a cooler view of the same country with a dark reef of rock running through it — with two palette knives beside them.
Both are extreme horizontals, roughly three to one, laid at opposing angles. Each puts the rock as a band across the upper half and gives the lower half to broken ground; neither has a vertical anywhere in it.
Oxblood, umber and terracotta in the cliffs against cerulean and white cloud in the first panel. The second is cooler throughout — teal, sage and dove, with the rock in deep maroon.
Knife-laid and dragged, the colour scraped on in long horizontal pulls so it sits on the surface with hard ridges at the ends of the strokes. Nothing is brushed and nothing is blended.
Oil on panel, two works, with the knives used on them. A studio photograph of a pair of works rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
