Desert, Landscapes — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Two small oil panels standing on a studio bench — a wave breaking over shallow reef, and red rock buttes rising against a blue sky.
The two panels sit side by side in a clear stand, overlapping slightly. The wave panel is built on a long horizontal and has no vertical in it; the rock panel is the reverse, all uprights, and the pair reads as a deliberate contrast.
The wave panel is cold throughout — cobalt, teal and blue-white — with one passage of ochre in the headland. The rock panel sets oxblood and umber against cerulean and holds no green at all.
Both are thickly painted with a loaded brush and left unblended, the water dragged horizontally and the rock laid in flat vertical slabs. The board edges are painted white on both.
Oil on canvas board, two panels. A studio photograph of a pair of works on the bench, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
