Landscapes, Desert — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Red sandstone cliffs above a green flat under heavy cumulus, in a gold slip and a wide black frame, photographed lying face up on a second frame.
The cliff wall runs across the upper half and steps back to the right; the flat below it takes the lower third. The cloud mass sits directly above the highest point of the rock, which is what holds the two halves together.
Cadmium orange and tan in the lit rock against violet in its shadows, over a flat of jade and emerald. The sky is cerulean with cloud in bone and dove.
Thick and square, the rock laid in flat slabs with a loaded brush and no drawing beneath, each stroke left exactly where it landed. The scrub below is dabbed in small separate touches.
Oil on canvas board, in a gold slip and a black frame. Photographed in the studio, resting on another frame.
Lower left, raypatrick, scratched into the wet paint over the scrub.
