Landscapes, Desert — oil painting by Ray Patrick

Nine oil panels arranged on a clear shelf below a larger canvas of a green flat with dead trees standing in it.
The large canvas runs across the top of the frame and the nine small panels are ranked below it in three rows. The big picture and the small ones share one armature — a level horizon, a low viewpoint, and the weather doing all the work.
Cerulean and dove through the skies over flats in emerald, sage and lavender. One panel at the centre is a sunset in cadmium orange with Joshua trees in silhouette and is the only warm picture in the group.
Thick and broken, the cloud laid in flat loaded strokes stacked rather than modelled and the ground dabbed over a warm underpainting. The method is identical in the large canvas and the small panels.
Oil on canvas and canvas board, ten works. A studio photograph of a group of works rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
