Deputy US Marshal
A panicked man bursts in begging Mersh to hide him, and is sent through to the back to see Miss Kitty. Three hours later a deputy marshal in a white hat is at the bar asking after him, trading gator bites and favours, before leaving with the line that gets him in the car.
Seven panels with a hand-lettered THREE HOURS LATER standing in as a panel of its own, which is how the strip does its cut. The first and last panels are both single heads in close-up — the man who is hiding and the man who is looking — and they bracket the rest.
Acid yellow-green through the bar against the violet and blue of the marshal's arrival, with the hat and shirt left as bare paper so the figure reads instantly.
Ink over pencil with washes laid in broken, streaky strokes that leave the paper showing through. Faces carry nearly all the modelling and the backgrounds are barely there.
