Cat Daddy
Mersh lighting a cigarette with a flip lighter, the flame reflected in his dark glasses, while an enormous blue-black cat rears up behind him with a paw on each of his shoulders. The words CAT DADDY are lettered across the upper left.
A tight double portrait, man and animal filling the sheet with the cat's head directly above and behind his, so the two faces stack into one shape. The lighter flame sits at the exact centre and is the only light source.
Hot coral and orange through the face and shirt, lit from below, against cold cobalt and indigo in the cat and the ground. The two halves of the colour wheel meet along his shoulders.
Washes laid over strong ink with the lighting modelled rather than flat — the face is built from warm glazes against the hatched blue of the cat's coat, which is drawn in close parallel strokes.
Watercolour and ink on paper.
No signature within the painted area.
