pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

A large graphite study of a head seen from below, lying on a table with two smaller versions of the same head on a second sheet behind it and pencils beside them.
The large study fills the frame and is cropped at every edge; the two small ones sit above it, ranked. The head is tipped well back so the eye, the nostril and the underside of the jaw carry the drawing.
Graphite on white, a broad even mid-grey across the whole ground with the lights cut back to bare paper and the eye sockets pushed to black.
The ground is rubbed down to a smooth continuous tone, and the form is found by lifting out the lights rather than drawing in the darks — the opposite order from the studies behind it.
Graphite on paper, three studies on two sheets. A studio photograph of a group of drawings rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
