pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

A sheet of graphite studies on a workbench — a skull at the top, a large head below it tipped back, and a third begun at the bottom edge — with a chisel and clips beside them.
The studies run down the sheet in a column and the sheet itself is set at an angle to the frame. The skull and the head are drawn at the same scale and the same tilt, so the page reads as one anatomical argument.
Graphite on white, carried to a dense black in the orbits and the shadowed jaw and left bare along the lit crown and cheek.
Laid in flat planes with the side of the lead and rubbed down, then cut back into with a sharp point only at the eye sockets, the teeth and the nostril. The construction lines are left visible all round.
Graphite on paper, three studies, dated in pencil. A studio photograph of a sheet on the workbench, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
