pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

Two graphite studies of Michelangelo's David on one sheet, both cropped close to the head and lit hard from one side.
The two sit one above the other and are read in sequence. Each is boxed in a rectangle of tone, the head set at the right of its box with the dark ground opening to the left.
Graphite on white, pushed to a near-black in the grounds and left as bare paper on the lit brow, nose and cheek — the full range used in both studies.
The curls are the busiest passage, cut in as small sharp chips of white against black, while the planes of the face are laid broadly and left. The ground is rubbed smooth so the drawn marks sit against it.
Graphite on paper, two studies, annotated in pencil. A studio photograph of a sheet of studies with the pencil used on them, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
