pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

A graphite study of a human skull seen three-quarters from below, drawn large on a sheet with four pencils and a brush lying across the lower corner.
The skull sits high on the sheet and is cropped at the crown, with the construction box ruled round it still showing. The pencils lie across the bottom on a diagonal and crop the drawing in the photograph.
Graphite on white, pushed to black in the orbits and the nasal opening and left as bare paper across the frontal bone and the cheek.
Hatched in short parallel strokes that follow the curve of the bone, so the form is carried by the direction of the line rather than by tone. The teeth are the only passage drawn with a sharp point.
Graphite on paper. Photographed on the studio table with the pencils used on it.
No signature visible within the drawn area.
