pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

Two graphite studies of classical busts on one sheet — a bearded head at the left, worked in hard facets, and a youthful head in a cloak at the right, fully modelled against a black ground.
The two heads face one another across the sheet at the same scale. The left is left open on bare paper; the right is set against a dense hatched ground that closes round it entirely.
Graphite on white. The right-hand study uses the whole range from black ground to bare paper; the left is kept light and has no true dark in it at all.
The bearded head is built from flat angular chips with every edge hard — the drawing of a sculptor. The head beside it is rubbed and blended, and the drapery over its shoulder is the most finished passage on the sheet.
Graphite on paper, two studies on one sheet. A studio photograph of a sheet of drawings rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
