Subject

Three large graphite head studies on a sheet — a man seen from below, a second in deep shadow, and a third turned away — with a spiral sketchbook of figure drawings beside them.

Composition

The three heads run down the sheet at a slight angle, each cropped at the neck and set against bare paper. None is a likeness pose; each is an exercise in where the light stops.

Palette

Graphite on white throughout, worked from a near-black in the shadowed planes to bare paper in the lights, with no mid-tone wash anywhere.

Handling

Built in flat angular planes rather than modelled roundly — the shadow shapes are blocked in with the side of the lead and the edges left hard, so each head reads as faceted.

Medium and support

Graphite on paper, three studies, with pencilled dates in the margin. A studio photograph of a sheet of studies and a sketchbook, not a single picture.

Signature

No signature legible at this scale.
