pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

Two graphite studies on one sheet — a head tipped back and broken into hard faceted planes at the upper left, and a male nude lying full length below it.
The sheet is seen at an angle and both studies lie on their sides relative to the frame. The head is set in a panel of dense hatched ground; the figure below is left on bare paper with no ground at all.
Graphite on white, carried to a near-black in the ground behind the head and kept to a soft mid-grey in the figure. The two halves of the sheet use quite different ranges.
The head is cut into sharp geometric facets with hard edges; the body is modelled smoothly along the length of each limb. One sheet, two opposite ways of describing form.
Graphite on paper, two studies on one sheet. A studio photograph of a sheet of drawings rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
