Subject

A graphite study of a female nude lying full length with one arm behind her head, and a second sheet behind carrying a large head tipped back.

Composition

The figure runs corner to corner down the sheet at a steep diagonal and is seen foreshortened from the feet. The head on the sheet behind is drawn at a far larger scale, so the two sit in deliberate disproportion.

Palette

Graphite on white, worked to a soft grey across the body with the lights left as bare paper down the ribs, hip and shin. The hair is the only near-black.

Handling

Modelled in long smooth passes that follow the length of the limb, with the ruled construction grid left showing underneath. The feet and the near hand are the most worked passages.

Medium and support

Graphite on paper, two studies on separate sheets. A studio photograph of drawings on the bench rather than a single picture.

Signature

No signature legible at this scale.
