pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

Graphite studies of apples and a skull on one sheet — four apples grouped in the near foreground, with a skull and two further fruit in a second study above.
The two studies sit one above the other, each in a ruled box. The lower group is read from close to and slightly above, the four apples overlapping so their cast shadows join into one mass.
Graphite on white, kept light and even. The darkest note is the shadow between the apples; there is no black anywhere on the sheet.
Every form is faceted rather than rounded — each apple built from flat angular planes with a single sharp white highlight left bare on the shoulder. The skull above is treated identically, which is the point of putting them on one page.
Graphite on paper, two studies, dated in pencil. A studio photograph of a sheet of studies rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
