pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

Two graphite figure studies from the life room — a seated male torso at the left, head bowed, and a standing female figure at the right — on overlapping sheets.
The male study fills the left sheet and is cropped at the thigh; the standing figure is smaller and whole, set in its own panel of worked ground at the right. The two sheets overlap along a vertical seam at the centre.
Graphite on white, from a dense grey ground to bare paper on the lit shoulder, chest and thigh. The range is narrower than in the head studies — there is no true black anywhere.
The grounds are hatched in long parallel strokes and the figures emerge by being left bare, so the drawing is made by what is around it. The modelling inside the figure is soft and rubbed.
Graphite on paper, two studies on separate sheets. A studio photograph of a pair of drawings rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
