pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

Three graphite studies of classical heads on overlapping sheets — a youth full face at the left, a faceted study of the same head above right, and a bearded philosopher below it — with brushes and pencils laid across them.
The three sheets overlap at angles and the heads are drawn at three different degrees of finish, from fully modelled at the left to open construction at the lower right. The brushes lie across the join and tie the group together in the photograph.
Graphite on white throughout. The left study carries the full range to a soft black ground; the other two are kept light and linear with almost no tone.
The same head is attacked three ways — rubbed and modelled, broken into flat chips of light and shade, and left as pure construction. Seen together the sheet is a lesson in how the drawing is built.
Graphite on paper, three studies on separate sheets, dated in pencil. A studio photograph of a group of drawings rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
