pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

Graphite studies of a classical head on overlapping sheets — a large one at the left, chin lifted and lit from above, with two smaller versions of the same cast beside it.
The large head runs the full height of the left sheet and is cropped at the crown and the throat. The two smaller studies sit on a second sheet at the right, ruled into boxes, and repeat the same head at different angles.
Graphite on white, worked to a dense charcoal black in the ground behind the head and left as bare paper down the lit side of the nose and throat.
The hair and the laurel are cut in as sharp white chips against black, while the planes of the face are laid broadly with the side of the lead. The contrast between those two touches is what gives the head its marble quality.
Graphite on paper, three studies on two sheets, dated in pencil. A studio photograph of a group of drawings rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
