pencil drawing by Ray Patrick

Three graphite studies on one sheet — a bust of a bearded man at the left, a standing female nude seen from behind at the centre, and a second nude leaning with her hand at her chin at the right.
The three run across the sheet at the same height and at nearly the same scale, so the page reads as a row. The two figures are whole; the bust is cropped at its plinth.
Graphite on white, from a dense black in the hair and the cast shadow to bare paper down the lit side of each figure. The shadow on the floor at the centre is the only pure black mass.
The bust is faceted hard in flat planes while the two nudes are modelled smoothly, worked from the shadow side outward. The cast shadow at the centre is laid flat with the side of the lead.
Graphite on paper, three studies on one sheet, dated and timed in pencil at the top. A studio photograph of a sheet of drawings rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
