ink drawing by Ray Patrick

Graphite studies of folded cloth on a sheet — a large dark mass of drapery at the left and a paler one at the right — with a spiral sketchbook of pen caricatures open behind.
The two cloth studies sit side by side on the sheet, each in a ruled box with its cast shadow running out to the right. The sketchbook cuts across the upper right corner at an angle.
Graphite on white. The left study is pushed almost to black in the fold; the right is kept light, so the sheet carries the whole range from one to the other.
Built in soft rubbed planes with the lights lifted back out — no line survives anywhere in the cloth. The pen drawings behind are the opposite in every way: pure contour, no tone.
Graphite on paper and pen and ink in a spiral-bound sketchbook, dated in pencil. A studio photograph of several works, not a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
