marker drawing by Ray Patrick

Six or seven heads across a sketchbook spread, drawn in grey marker and black ink — the same face worked repeatedly, tilted and turned, with hair cut in as flat black shapes.
The heads crowd the spread at every angle and overlap one another, larger in the near foreground and smaller toward the top. There is no setting and no ground; the page is the space.
Two greys and a black over white paper, with faint graphite construction lines showing through. There is no other colour anywhere on the spread.
The grey is laid first in broad flat strokes that establish the shadow shape, then the black ink is cut over it in a fast brush line for the hair, the eyes and the mouth. Nothing is modelled; every tone is a flat patch.
Grey marker and black ink in a spiral-bound sketchbook, several studies on one spread. A studio photograph of a page of studies rather than a single picture.
No signature legible at this scale.
